Laptop screen dim on one side

I have a Dell Latitude 800 and it is about 2 years old. The left side of the screen is dim but not to the point that I can't see my work. It is almost like a shadow and it does NOT have a clear line of demarcation but instead appears to have a gradual darkening between the brighter Right side and the darker left side. Any idea what this might be?

I really need to be able to use this computer for the next 6 months to finish a doctoral program and need to be able to put a new software program on it (SPSS) but I'm afraid it is getting ready to die. Any advice? I really can't afford a new one right now. Does this sound fixable?

My suggestion would be to take it to a Repair shop...Best buy and Circuit City both have fairly good ones. Have them take a look at it because unfortunately this doesn't sound like something you can fix on your own and its not like a desktop where you can just replace the monitor.

I would go there asap so your screen doesn't completely crap out on you and you can't see anything.

I spoke to my IBM engg regarding this. as per him your LCD display is about to die soon. Nothing can be done for that, but replace the LCD display.
