    Equal columns in CSS revisited

Okay here is what I have been Googleing and Googleing in an effort to
find an answer to my current design delemma:
Css columns equal height; macromedia.com columns equal... basically
variations on this. And apparently, there is No answer. Er, no Good
answer. But somehow, some web designer over at Macromedia.com sold his
soul and managed to get two columns to line up and (with a gap between
exposing a gradient background). Does anyone know if this is
recreateable in CSS without getting the Devil involved? How can this be
so hard? How does macromedia create the look of their site?

If someone can get me an answer (that really [really] works) before my
deadline (January 1st - but I need the fix at least a week before that)
I would happily PayPal $50 to him or her.

What I need: Two flexible columns, with caps (pods) that line up
side-by side, that allow for a gradient background to come through
above, below and beside the columns. Oh yeah, and the left columns is
divided into a top and bottom section, where the gradient background
    needs to shine through.

    Thanks so much for reading.

Uh nevermind. I figured it out... so simple - same as everone else has
done already. Hopefully this will fit into my design as well. We will
find out. They just use two columns with basically the same trick as
    described here: http://www.alistapart.com/articles/fauxcolumns/ and so
many other places. They just execute it better. Fantastic. Thanks for
    playing. Laters all.

Only issue with that - one column must be a fixed pixel width. I don't
      particularly like this solution...

FWIW, I've had some successes using both ems and %. You just need to
adjust the background image size and colored portion/position
accordingly. For example, use a very wide image (e.g. 2000px) and put
the separator 30% from the end for a 30%-wide sidebar. Adjust to taste.
