replied to The hassle of hosting a website . . .
You have two separate items you need to get to put a website online:
    • The domain name
    • The host server that will house your website files

Domain registrars (where you buy domain names from) usually offer hosting options, too, so you can get both from the same vendor. You can also purchase hosting from someone other than your domain name registrar and then link the domain to your web host.

Some examples of domain name registrars/web...

  • Need an Apache server that I can access anywhere, just to practice PHP, mySQL, etc.

    Hello,

I am looking at hosting options with Apache, PHP, and MySQL so that I can learn web development. My question is: what is the difference between a traditional web host and AWS/Google cloud services? I see that both AWS and Google Cloud Compute offer Linux virtual hosting instances where I could install what I need.

    Cheers,
    Tim

Can I Customize Products with Flash?

    Hi Bytes Community,

I am developing a desktop application where customers can customize our product. It would be very similar to Nike ID, the online Nike store where you can customize and order shoes. I am not so concerned with the eCommerce part just yet... I just want to create a desktop application where they can select the product and then "drag and drop" the custom parts into the correct positions. It would also include...

I need a secure form for my website

    Hi Bytes Community,

I would like to implement a secure form on my website. We need a place for our distributors to be able to fill out an application. I want it to work just like a contact form, but I want the boxes to be the application information instead.

I have made forms for websites before. Visitors were able to visit the site, fill out the form, and click "submit" which would then send all of the information...

How Do You Keep Track of Passwords?

    Hi Bytes Community,

I was wondering how most of you keep track of all of your usernames and passwords? I probably have 15 to 25 accounts on the internet with different usernames and passwords. I also own a website design company, and I need a way to keep track of all of my client username and passwords for hosting account, domain name registrars, etc.

I guess I am really asking two questions here:

    1. How...

  • @sicarie and Rabbit:

Thank you both for your help, I used both sets of advice and cleaned up a ton of viruses, etc. from the family PC. Unfortunately, there was an extra step I had to take to get rid of the virus that was ultimately causing all of the redirect problems in my browsers. Like I said, the virus would redirect me to fraudulent websites when I tried to click on links in Google search results. I found a very helpful link and...

  • Hi Bytes Community,

The "Fatal Error" message I received in the post above was due to the PHP file calling for a method that was not available to it. I simply needed to put another PHP file that this one referred to in the same folder. Problem solved.

In case anyone has this issue in the future, that is: "Creating a form that allows visitors to upload a file and then 'submit' or email the uploaded file within...

  • Hi Bytes,

I have gotten pretty far, and it looks like I am very close to getting it working.

I have run into a problem that I do not understand how to fix. When I submit the form, I get this message:

Fatal error: Call to undefined method Mail_mimePart:: encodeHeader() in /home/sowegaca/public_html/mime.php on line 1322

Here is the code snippet from the php file it is referencing to:

  • Hi sicarie,

I appreciate your help, I had unfortunately become sidetracked by more pressing matters over the last month. I am going to rework the problem with your advice now, and I will post my results here.

For now I have my family using Ubuntu on that PC so they can work without all of this virus mess.

Thanks again, and talk to you soon.

  • How to upload then send a document as attachment via email?

    Hi Bytes Community,

My problem can best be described in steps my website visitors will go through:
    1. Someone visits my webpage
    2. They click a "browse" button that allows them to select a file from their own computer
    3. Once they have selected a file, they click a "submit" button
    4. The file is then sent to a single email address as an attachment

Basically, I have people who need to submit volunteer...

  • Can't Get Rid of Nasty Redirect Virus in IE and Firefox.

    Hi Bytes Community,

I don't have a problem with my computer, but my family's main computer is having some issues. It is an HP Pavilion desktop running Windows XP.

The computer has a nasty redirect virus that I cannot seem to get rid of. It affects both Firefox and Internet Explorer on that computer. Whenever you try to do a search in Google, or visit websites, many times it redirects you to fraudulent websites.

  • Thanks NeoPa! I am glad I am making it through this recession with a little pocket money. I'm glad to see that so many businesses still want a web presence even when there isn't that much room in the budget.

Thank you for the input Niheel.

  • Thanks for the feedback. I wanted to hear from some community members who use the software. I didn't know why the reviews were so awful either, but after a second look at them it appeared as if they were complaining about problems with older versions that support got dropped for (which is not at all a reflection of the most current version).

Amazon reviews are not the end-all decision makers for me, which is why I posted here in the...

  • P.S.

Employers will look for work experience if you are trying to go for a more prestigious job. Make sure that you are getting your foot in the door through internships, etc. Nobody cares if you folded clothes at the clothing boutique in the mall.

  • There might be a lot of people who disagree with me, but unless you go to an Ivy League school, they don't care where your degree is from.

Something else I learned from my own experience: Taking your first two years of general education courses at an expensive University is a complete waste of money. My suggestion would be to get the gen ed classes completed at a community college (MUCH cheaper, I didn't pay for anything at my community...

What software should I use to track finances?

    Hello Bytes Community,

About 4 months ago I started a website/graphic design business. It has been going well, but as of yet I have not started to track any of my finances (personal or business). I am 19, so until recently I didn't have to worry about it because I wasn't paying taxes or even making that much income. But now my business is growing very fast, and I have thousands of dollars coming in monthly. I need software to track...

  • An easy fix using CSS would be to apply the "min-height" attribute in each of your columns:
    Code:
    min-height: 30em;
Use this in each of your CSS column descriptions, or create a class and apply it to all three columns. Just make the size slightly larger than your largest column and they will all be the same size. This will not "grow" dynamically as you add content though. If your largest column grows taller...

replied to HTML vs. Wordpress vs. Dreamweaver ?
Jamison Bryant is right. I've looked at code from Microsoft Publisher and it is a giant mess. It isn't even close to standards-compliant.

You are talking about three different ways to design websites:

1.) Software like Dreamweaver and Microsoft Publisher let you design a website by "point-and-click." This sounds great, and some of the sites designed with this software even looks cool, but it is almost never completely...

  • Back in my early days, when I just started getting into website design, I ran into the same problem you are having.

My first website I designed was a basic three column layout with a header and a footer. It looked great at home, but when I viewed it on a monitor during school, it looked tiny and was set off to one side of the screen.

The problem was the way I positioned the "divs." I used only the 'absolute'...

  • It is possible to make the background-image attribute in CSS linkable, but it involves setting some element to "display: block;" and then setting "text-indent:" at about -3000px.

This is more of a sloppy hack, and it is not good form.

    Cheers,
    Tim
