I would suggest to download a liveCD to give it a go. After a while, you could do a disk install. I would not suggest using dual boot, maybe thats because I'm lazy, but after a while you will take your default option. Or you do it right, or you don't.
I would say: have lots of fun trying linux, I'm an exclusive user for about 10 years now (including professional) and I have never regretted it.

LFS is a way to create a new distro for linux, but there are others as well, you could also base your distro on existing distros as ubuntu, debian, slackware, gentoo, ... You just have to find a base system you like and use that as your starting point. If you prefer a completely new system, go for LFS, you could like the package management of X or Y go with that. Just try to figure out why your distro is special and focus on that because in the end,...Leave a comment:

I agree with your recommendations Frinny. But like I said, I have seen companies that used this method. I would never ever attempt to do it like this, I believe that a client by default is malicious so all checks should be done on the serverside.
Thanks a lot FrinnyLeave a comment:

that is one part of the security model, but how could you prevent a malicious attacker from modifying the content of the jar. This is under the assumption that the JAR file contains some data that will not be checked by the server and is excepted as is.Leave a comment:

The server-client application that I'm talking about is a bit as follows:
a client has to download a java jar file that will act as a client for the application. the client will use it to enter data, modify things, login,... but the result is checked & verified by the server. but there should be some security measure in place that would prevent a malicious user from modifying the client jar file.
Already big thanks...Leave a comment:

Does that mean that their is not a general function in place in the Java console (the sandbox) that would allow to check the .jar independently. I'm talking from a security point of view, so if the jar is responsible for it's own signing, it would just be an open lock on a door?Leave a comment:

Java Server Client application Signing the client jar
Hello,
I'm doing some research in to Java security, and I have a question. In my line of work I find from time to time client applications written in java (so a .jar) that connects to a server, but the server will not work with a manipulated .jar. Now my question is, how does that work? After reading on the net I found that it is possible to sign a jar file with either a key or a certificate (maybe others), but nothing about how this... -
another solution that exists is crossover. It is a commercial implementation of Wine with some more bells & whistles.Leave a comment:

I'm not on a windows machine, but the bat script would look something like this.
cd "C:\Program Files\folder\to \your\applicati on\"
yourapp.exe
Then you create a shortcut to this bat file and change the icon (right click - properties)Leave a comment:

I think it might be indeed the directory structure. You could change the shortcut a bit, for example launch a bat file that will first cd in the correct directory and then execute the executable.Leave a comment:

I would suggest explode the string and always take the last 2 values of the returned array.Leave a comment:

you could solve this by issuing the following command:
chmod a-w /folder/to/phpmyadmin/conffileLeave a comment:
