Hardware devices that are not installed properly in the computer can also cause random reboots. Make sure all the cables and expansion cards are connected properly to the computer. The best way to determine this is to disconnect and reconnect all cables and expansion cards.
If the above solution does not work. You might run a ScanDisk on your hard drive to make sure everything is in order.

You can't recover data that was overwritten, unfortunately.
If the new file you have is shorter than the original one, you maybe able to find the raw fragments from the original version manually on the disk.

I had faced the same situation as yours. I thought I lost all my data. One of my friend told me that reformatting a drive does not does not erase the data on the disk, but only the address table.
