Well, do you mean to ask for a replacement to index.dat file or do you want to permanently delete it?

As far as I know of, most people ask for a way to delete index.dat, but you seem to ask for an alternative to index.dat (i.e. replcement for index.dat).

In IE7 and onwards, index.dat is not used.

My question is clear to those who already know this different in IE7.

IE7 for some reasons doesn't create and use index.dat but something else - probably hidden files , etc

I am interested to know what files are these (if there are any) or there is something else IE7 use as alternative to index.dat

I think you are slightly incorrect as IE 7 DOES use index.dat although it uses it a little differently than previous versions of IE 7

there are quite a few other posts on the web but you will have to try and filter out the incorrect ones as there seems to be a bit of confusion on this.

as extra proof of this here is the handle.exe output on index.dat from a system running IE8

If you search for index.dat in your Windows (if you are running IE 7), you won't find any index.dat file in whole drive except the ones already saved by IE6 or older versions, which are not being used by IE7.

I am going to presume that you are running Vista as this is the only situation where I would expect to see this happen and this is due to how the system protects this file , I was running IE 7 on an xp machine and it was there and visible and definitely in use

also if you read the original article that this so called tech journalist links too you will see that he slightly misunderstood the wording and NOWHERE does it say that index.dat is no longer used !
