    Applications slows to open sometimes

Hey guys, I have an annoying problem. I have a Dell D620 with 1.2 gig of ram and a core duo processor running Windows XP Pro. Not powerful, but does work very well. My problem is that some applications open very very very slowly. Actually, it's more like 70% open slowly. Even JCreator takes forever. I've tried defraging it, I've tried disabling realtime protection on my Symantic. I don't want to re-install my OS because it has dual-boot with Fedora Core 6 & if you look around, this laptop is NOT made to be installed with Linux easy. Even notepad documents open slow. This isn't an everytime occurance though. What should I do?

How many things are running when you open Task Manager to the Processes view? What does your CPU average for usage (at the bottom of Task Manager) when you are not doing anything? How much free space is left on your hard drive?

Sorry for the delayed reply. In a lawsuit with my landlord so I've been trying to do my homework.

Anywho, Some of the processes are small ones, but most of the time it's the first application that is running on my pc. I have about 20gig of free space left. I have 1gig of RAM so it's suffice to open everyday applications like excel & such. My OS is XP Pro so it's not eating a resources that bad & I have on-board video but I don't do gaming on the machine so just IDE compilers, browers, & maybe some video players like Winamp or Windows player that ever touch the machine.

When you start up your machine, after everything has loaded and before you start working, how many processes are running? You can find this number at the bottom left corner of the Task Manager.

There are about 20 processes running. The highest process is IExplorer.exe with about 38,000K of memory

Do you know what each of those processes are? Are they all supposed to be there?

Yeah, most to all of the processes are basic or I know what they are & should be there. You think it's hard drive failure?

Check out your BIOS settings and see if there is a "Performanc e" mode or something similar. A lot of laptops have a feature where the processor will reduce it's clock speed if it detects that it is not being used to its capacity. My 2GHz processor can clock down to 800MHz if I let it (P.S. I don't).

Hi, I also have a 2.00GHz processor in my Compaq notebook. I suspect that mine is reducing its "clock speed" most of the time also, and seem to remember the 800MHz figure from a manual or something....

Anyway, my question is how to keep the processor running at 2GHz.. ?

I believe that my friend, Motoma, answered that in the previous post.
Do you have a problem getting into the BIOS?

Well, I checked my BIOS & while I was there, I even spent the time to download updates for it. No change. *sigh* The worst situations are coming into play like reformatting the laptop or it's a bad HDD or even main board. If I didn't have Dual Boot with Linux, I'd re-do it in a heart beat. Thanks for the replies everyone. I'll still be looking into the problem & I'll post my solutions A.S.A.P.

                        Hello,

first time posting here but I thought some of my advice might be useful to you.

Can you just answer the following questions?

                        - Since when did you encounter this problem? Perhaps you installed something recently?

                        - Download a more advanced Task Manager such as Process Explorer, this program gives you more detailed information on the processes running and also when/how they started...

                        - Even though you seem to be familiar with all the processes running have you actually checked your computer for any spyware? Try Hijackthis and see if you have anything suspicious, also check for what is being listed in the startup section.

                        - Have you checked which services are running on your computer? You can find this out by right-clicking on My Computer -> Manage -> Services and Applications -> Services. Check out any suspicious services on there and see if they are started or not.

I hope some of this will help you out...
