My opinion would be that Linux is a better operating system, but less knowledge of how a PC works and how the operating system works is required to use Windows so Windows is good for those people who have little computer knowledge.

If you are using it to host a website I would use Linux for security reasons the only real advantage of having Windows over Linux would be the ability to use SQL Sever 2003 or ASP, where as with Linux you would be using MySQL or access and PHP.

Windows runs on most computers in the world, it a monopoly of it own and therefore its more compatible with day to day software and applications, hardware and so on. It will arguably be the most secure system once Vista comes out, but given its spread around the world it will be more of a global target for hackers, viruses, trojans and so on.

Linux is a less commong operating system designed for the communities like this one to contribute and expand on its open source. It runs servers for databases, websites and games faster and more securely than windows, but its less compatible and requiers extensive knowledge of coding and commands.



Can you give us a better scenario of what you are trying to do so that we can give you a better idea of the advantages and disadvantages of both systems.

The interface metaphor is where you get one advantage. The windows interface metaphors are just about the best one could ever get.

The advantage that affect me most has to do with compatibility. Most software runs on windows. The idea of having to recreate software just so it can run on Linux is ridiculous to me.

Why do you have to "re-create" software to run on linux? There are plenty of tools that create the running conditions for windows applications. One word, Wine (WINdows Emulator). However, I can see the concern one would have if they wanted to run Sharepoint, Exchange, or any other server apps. In point of fact, if you're asking yourself this question, you should be running Windows boxes, for everything except one task. File Server, it is proven that Unix file servers are far more dependable, secure, and scalable. So the question should boil down to the purpose of the server, not which SOS is better. Ideally you would run different boxes for different roles. My company has many Server 2003 boxes running Exchange, Project Server, Team Foundation Server, SQL Server, and Sharepoint, but all of our File Server needs are take care of by a Solaris box.

I guess I left out the most important thing. Licensing. Microsoft Licenses are so expensive they make me cry. Anyone want to guess how much a SharePoint license for anonymous users costs?
