Saved .rtf Help File corrupt after reformatting system

After following Microsofts admonition to reformat my system before doing a
final compilation of my app I got many warnings/errors upon compiling an rtf
file created in word. I used the Help Workshop program: hcw.exe that's
included with Visual Basic. This exact same file compiled perfectly with no
notes, warnings or errors prior to reformatting my system. Prior to the
reformatting, I copied the help.rtf file onto a CD and checked the box to
verify written data - which it did successfully. What the heck is going on
    here ? Please help. Thanks.

I'd like to know where/how you received "Microsoft' s admonition to reformat
    my system before doing a

Weird. I know that it's common knowledge that it is best to compile an app
on a relatively clean system using the minimum os your app should support,
but I've never seen or heard any recommendation that one should reformat
their entire system before compiling a release version of an app!

Well ya got me but he stated several times "I can't emphasize too strongly
the importance of reformatting your system to ensure a clean app" not
exactly word for word, but that's the gist of it.. I heard it over a year
ago. I think it was called a netmmeeting - an audio file was played.

I'm wondering if that reference was to reformatting when a beta version of
an app or os was installed, to ensure for production that no beta references
or components were included. As I said, I've never heard of a blanket
recommendation to reformat just for a clean os before a final compile.

It's been a while since I did a Help file in Help Workshop, but I seem
to remember making an ID mapping file, a .txt file I think, that
assigned each TopicID, such IDH_2001 or IDH_INSTALLATIO N, to a numeric
value. The format was something like
              IDH_2001 = 2001
              IDH_INSTALLATIO N = 2002
              etc.

So maybe you are just missing the mapping file. You can probably
recreate one if you don't have it.

PS: I agree with Randy, there is no reason to reformat a drive just to
do a release. Just check the version of every file listed in references,
etc. and in any setup program, so your program can run on Win98 or
whatever OS version you need to support.

When you copy things from CD usually it remains write protected. Check to
make sure the index file is not marked write protected.

I didn't create a mapping file. I just used the .rtf file format method
described in visual Basic 6 Black Book. Using this method, I previously
created a 100% error free help file from an 80 MB word file. If some mapping
file was created by hcw.exe it was transparent to me. As a test, I created a
simple help file with 2 jump tags last night and it was 100 % error free and
no notes or warnings. Worked exactly as expected. Did hcw.exe create some
kind of mapping file and put it in some obscure place on the help file I
created prior to reformatting my system ? By the way, the help file itself
created before reformatting the system worked perfectly after copying from
my CD onto the reformatted system. The thing is, I wanted to add a few
                      things to it.

I just read from your reply to Dave that you are not using an index /
mapping and I also read your help file works fine when copied from a CD.

I have no idea except for the hcw being a different version (?)

same version installed from same cd as before. Something just occurred to
me. hcw.exe was installed to a completely different directory. I don't see
how that should make a difference, but I'm going to install it in the same
directory as before and see if that changes anything.
