Backup

What is the best practice to backup my database from a production server to a backup server? Currently i have been manually backing up database and then transferring a huge file from production server to backup server and then restoring the backup file on the backup server. Is there a way that i can automate this process, or have it backup may be every 12hrs automatically rather than me manually doing the backup?
