How to set certain value into field?

Hi

If I have one field name q4 and I want to calculate the likert scale value like below , I need to set the value to number first for further statistic calculation.
How do I set say agree ->4, mid -> 3, Totally Agree->5 etc? and create a new column of the number value side by side?

You might consider just creating a lookup/reference table for this one and just use JOIN.

It might be worth your while to design a table that has both a value and text label for your likert values if your responses are not stored somewhere else in your DB.

Scale          Label                                       Total
1                 Strongly disagree                      12
2                 Disagree                                   38
3                 Neither agree nor disagree          77
4                 Agree                                       24
5                 Strongly agree                          18

If your responses are recorded somewhere in your DB, you can use a table like the one below to look up your likert values from a SELECT COUNT(*) WHERE query.

1                 Strongly disagree                    
2                 Disagree                                 
3                 Neither agree nor disagree        
4                 Agree                                      
5                 Strongly agree
