Can someone please explain to me how to enable SSL encryption for SQL server. I have no idea where to begin.

I've been searching on google and I found out that before I can enabled SSL for IIS I have to request a certificate and now I'm totally confused can you tell me more about the Certificate.
(i) What's the link between this Certificate and SSL
(ii) How do I request this Cetificate
(iii) How do I enable SSL for IIS
