    MFC and Visual Studio

    Is there a way to get the MFC libraries for free?


    if not, (and probably not)...

    Is buying Visual Studio worth it?
    I know I'm going to use C# and C++.
    I'm not a "pro", but i need more power then the express edition offers.

    If so, which version/edition should i get?
    (need it mainly for resource editing and MFC)

      Only you know your financial situation. If you make $10k/year its more painful than if you make $150k/year.

      Have you read the literature for what you gain in the different versions? "More Power" is a great Tim The Toolman Tailor phrase, but doesn't tell any of us reader what your exact expectations are.

      I assume that at 17 you are a student. Be sure to check the student outlets for software (both online at campus bookstores) as MS does provide software at a steep student discount.
      Just one online example where VSpro is $99 to students (not meant as a recommendation of the seller as I have never used them)

          Although I like doing things the man's way... *long pause*
          I meant things like MFC, ATL, resource editor,setup projects and all the good stuff that come with the package that somewhat enhance the programming experience.

              Ya got me. Like I said, I've never used that on-line store. I have used others. My Visual Studio 2008 cost me about $130 Australian when I bought it. At that time it would have been about $100 American. But that was through an Aussie on-line educational seller.

              All I can suggest is to provide your proof of student status as they request and try to make it happen. You don't have to volunteer any information they don't ask for. If they don't want to accept it, try the next eSeller.

                  There is a way to get the MFC libraries to work on the express editions, but it is illegal to do so, so it won't be covered here. As for buying VS pro or standard it really depends on what you want to accomplish. C# is way better than MFC and much easier to use. If you don't want to use C# I would look into other WIN32 wrapper libraries rather than going with MFC. If you really want to do it the "Mans Way" get rid of MFC and use straight WIN32. I was able to purchase 2005 standard for ~$15USD from my college. I think there is some restrictions in the ToS where the product can't be used commercially, but I may be mistaken on that.

                          Joking right? $15 bucks is too much to save you hours of programming hell? Dude, mow an extra couple lawns this month. Work 3 more hours at McDonalds. Buy one less meal at McDonalds.
