Help accessing mail server using imap

Hello Gusy,
I want to access a local mail server using imap from php. But i was not able to connect at all. I have read many codes but none of them worked for me. Do I need any special "imap" or "mail" server to access a mail server? Do all mail server accept imap connection request and how would i know that?

Are you getting any error messages? Are you using somebody else's IMAP package, or are you rolling your own?

Hey buddy,
10x 4 ur reply. I am gettin the common "can't open stream" error first and foremost. I am not sure abt the second question you asked me, but i am using imap_open from scratch. Btw, if helps, the mail server can be accessed by squiremail except their code is over complicated n undocumented. Hope that helps.

I wanted to double check to make sure you weren't using e.g., SwiftMail or PHPMailer, etc.
