Can someone, anyone, help me, I am pulling my hair out trying to install SQL 2008. I am novice SQL and C# developer, my expertise being with RPG III. I have been using, on my development machine running under Windows 7 (64bit), SQL 2005 and SQL Server Management Studio Express. Everything was dandy until a few weeks ago when I could no longer access my database, I was getting error: “The database ‘database name’ cannot be opened because it is version 661. The server supports version 612 and earlier. A downgrade path is not supported.” I suspect I am getting this error because I foolishly accepted an offer from Microsoft to “Try Visual Studio 2010 Professional” and ever since then I get the error mentioned earlier. In my inexperience, and after digesting the error message, I thought OK, if I upgrade to SQL 2008 and SSMSE 2008, that will solve the problem. Being cautious I did not uninstall 2005 versions of the aforementioned, but I read somewhere that one could run both version on the same machine. After downloading and running the install programs, it seems to be thinking, progress bar moves along, dialog messages flash by, but it’s all smoke and mirrors, at the end of it nothing happens. I have SQL 2008 but no SSMSE 2008. What am I doing wrong?
