Which touchscreen mobile is best ?

G1 won't be good for a while, stick with the iPhone. Or if you want the windows mobile approach, HTC Touch Dual is a neat little unit

iPhone: intuitive and very responsive interface and feature rich

I've played with the G1, HTC, and new Blackberry.

The sad thing is because of the patent issues, i don't know if any of the other hardware providers will be able to duplicate the iphone's usability.

I didn't like any of the touch's i've tried. I have fat fingers and they don't work well with touch screens.
I've got my eye on the samsung omnia, but its been disapointing and sluggish when I used verizon's version of it.

I recently got an AT&T Tilt (HTC 8925) mainly for the price ($99 referb.) I was looking at the Pantech Duo as well. I liked the fact the Pantech has separate slide out keyboard and numberpad, but the screen on that was just too small for me.

I like the Tilt, although in hindsight, I'm wishing I'd gotten something with a bit larger screen. I don't text, so the keyboard, which was a selling point at the time, is not really as good a feature as I'd thought.

The iPhone is nice, but no 3G in my podunk little neck of the woods. Plus, I don't like the idea of only screen keys. I like a couple of buttons on the bottom and sides.

My ideal smartphone would have the screen size of the iPhone, the front and side buttons of the Tilt and the slide out numberpad of the Pantech Duo. Oh.. It'd run OpenMoko Linux as well.

Hmmm I think I'm going to have to check out the G1. I don't think I've seen it for sale though. I'm also in the market for a new phone but have no plan on getting the iPhone because A: its way too expensive for a data plan in Canada; and B: I have an iTouch that I'm perfectly happy with.

I have a feeling the G1 is going to be too much for what I need...but I'm planning on doing some mobile development in the near future so I have to keep an open mind as to which phone I want to get....and I wouldn't mind getting back into Java for a bit.

I think the G1 is only available through TMobile directly (I am sure you can buy an "unlocked" one and find a way to get some other cell service to work on it)

I don't like the iPhone at all. I like devices which I can play around with as much as possible. I hate having to go to the apple store for every little thing. I don't like the idea of having to get a whole new operating system (and hardware => Mac) Just so I can write a program that runs on my device.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but apparently in this thread there's a link to a development center to create iPhone apps that might not be dependent on the Mac OS.

The last post by Mark in that thread (post #9) seems to confirm that you need Mac OS to run the iPhone SDK.

Yeah, you need an Apple to do iPhone dev.

If you are interested in tinkering, the iPhone is totally not for you. If however, you are interested in something that has a brilliant design, then check it out.

The iPhone isn't strictly innovative in any way, because everything it has done has been done on something else first. Except perhaps the multi-touch screen on a phone, but that's not as big of a deal as people make it seem. It's even missing a few features that other phones have had for like five years, like MMS (picture messaging) and copy+paste functionality.

But one thing it does do well is presentation+ea se of use. The device is excellently proportioned and comfortable. The OS runs very well (far fewer crashes than I have with my WinMo 5/6 phones), and the apps look and work great. Also, the simple things are the thinks that really make the whole experience stand out. Like kinetic scrolling. The whole experience just feels natural, intuitive. I could give this "smartphone " to anyone in the office, and they wouldn't have much trouble with it, except for the syncing part (which I would help them set up initially). In fact, Apple doesn't even ship these things with a manual.

But the phone I'm currently drooling over is the HTC Touch Pro or the Touch HD. The Touch Pro is called the ATT Fuze in the US. I don't think the Touch HD has made it's way to any carrier over here yet.

The iPhone won't do file transfer using bluetooth either. You just use the bluetooth for calls and listening to music. No MMS either.

I could really go on and on about the missing basics in that thing.
Oh, and doesn't anyone know how to delete a song from it without connecting it to a computer and doing it from iTunes?

I ended up getting an iTouch a while ago from a pawn shop (right about the time the iPhone came out). I didn't know what it was when I got it... I just thought it was an iPod to play my MP3s. I spent 3 nights playing around with it and I have to say I really enjoy it even today. It replaced my PDA and my old MP3 player (that looked like a steel rat bit it).
