really responsive search script

Hi,

I want to make a page that when it loads it queries a mysql database. Say it comes up with 1000 results. I then have several option on the screen to refine my search. Any changes I make will instantly show the updated amout of results.

an example of what I am after is Auto Trader UK.

This would require Ajax. On the select drop down onchange, you make a call to a script on the server which queries the database and returns the result (could be just the number of cars, or a combination of data to populate other drop downs).
