How to edit and modify downloaded-premade buttons?

I don't know how to add text to buttons I downloaded from other websites. I tried to open buttons up in photoshop but they are locked and I can't put text on them.

Nevermind, I figured I had to save the locked button as a jpg. then I could work with it...

If you are trying to modify jpegs, gifs or a similar file type you won't be able to simply delete the text.

You would need the original working file before they have flattened and exported it.
