    wdg validator

The W3C validator reported that my personal page

is valid. But the WDG validator reports a warning about an unclosed end-tag:

    http://www.htmlhelp.com/cgi-bin/vali...lay.com/brian/

The strange thing is, the warning directs me to the *opening* tag for
the address element. Could anyone explain what this warning means?

The ADDRESS tag is fine. The /SPAN tag just before it is broken, though.

Look at the code immediately before the address element:

          </SPAN

          <ADDRESS>

There's your "unclosed end-tag" - the missing > and the end of the

Interesting - here's what I see when viewing the source. A direct copy and
paste. You'll note that little ">" has gone to parts unknown... hmm...

Good eye, Neal, good eye. (Ditto for Els and Philip Ronan.)

Right now, I'm trying to figure out why the W3C validator did *not*
complain. Time to bone up on my SGML, I'd say.

                Now reports it as valid.

But I'd guess you inadvertently used an abbreviated SGML form that is
technically allowed in HTML but not supported by [most] web software.
The "warnings=y es" causes the WDG validator to complain about it.

                For more detail, see http://valet.webthing.com/page/parsemode.html

Note that both WDG with warnings off and Page Valet in strict SGML mode
will give the same results as the W3C validator. Page Valet's default
("Web") mode is the same as WDG's warnings, while Valet's "fussy" mode
adds further checks and will warn even of abbreviated forms that are
                supported by most browsers.

After Neal pointed out what I had missed, I fixed it.

So it seems. I had left the closing bracket ">" of a closing tag off,
                  and didn't notice it.

After realizing my mistake, I figured it had to do with SGML. I'm only
somewhat familiar with abbreviated tags, so I couldn't be sure.
