Hide td borders with border-collapse

I read some NG posts on this and also looked at W3C and others.

I could not make border-style: hidden
work, next to <TD> with visible borders.

I was successful using border-style: none
if I used: border-collapse: separate

Anyone have comments or similar experiences ?? TIA
