HTML FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) List

About once a week, I post an FAQ pointer in this newsgroup
under the same heading as this post. That pointer has two purposes:

    1. To keep regulars from having to post the standard answers to standard
questions again and again; if you have a standard question, you might
save yourself some time by first reading the available material for
this group (i.e. FAQs, tutorials & references).

    2. To let posters know what other newsgroups exist where their questions
might get better answers. (E.g. posts about Javascript should go to
    comp.lang.javas cript, or maybe comp.infosystem s.www.authoring.misc)

The FAQ pointer was last updated on: May 13th, 2002

    (1) These short articles seem pointless to me.

    (2) If they are wanted, ISTM that they should have a Subject line which
is similar, but not identical, to that of the useful series also posted
    weekly IIRC.

    (3) When "the FAQ for this NG" is cited, the citer should clarify
whether he means one of the series of co-named news articles or he means
one of the Web documents cited therein or he means something else.

    The longer article posted in this group is IMHO not an HTML FAQ at all;
it is a FAQ *about* c.i.w.a.h, and could be termed a meta-FAQ.

Careful terminology and titling reduces confusion.

In pure practice you are responding to a machine.

The posts you are replying to comes from a 'cron job' that Boris did set
up on a server in Holland years ago.

There was a discussion here in this NG at that time which lead to this
      result.

Basically you can find what you need to know from these posts, i.e. how
to post to this NG and where to find the "officially registred" FAQ for
      this NG.

Likewise for learning how to cooperate with a very old and well
      established NG too.

History may be allowed to guide the present; but it must never be
allowed to control it. If Boris is still interested in this group, all
well and good, and he should respond to present-day opinions and needs.
If he, while having lost interest, is willing to act under the guidance
of a regular that he trusts - yourself maybe - that's OK.

But if the CRON job is no longer readily controllable by the regular
members of this group, then it should be stopped. It appears to be
running at a reputable institution, which should be responsible enough
to pay heed to reasonable requests, even if Boris is no longer there.

The material could be maintained and posted, thereafter, by an active
and knowledgeable current member of the group with access to suitable
systems. I'd be surprised if there were ad few as one of those.
