    network cable unplugged

    good afternoon everyone.
we had had a thuderstorm in the month of june. lost power and i never thought anything of it. a day later i went log on the internet. there is a box that tells me the network cable unplugged... of course i have done all the t/shooting that serval companies have advised. i installed new e/cards. still same problem. of cable company says my mother boards on both pc's are most likely burned. does anyone out there have any ideas before i replace 2 mother boards?

    thanks

Where does this "box" appear? Is it in the browser or do you mean in the Windows Taskbar? (I'm guessing, you're using Windows?) If it's the latter, have you had a look at the back of your computer and checked if the LEDs at the Network card (or Ethernet connection on the motherboard) are on?

      What exactly are these "e/cards"?

Wait a minute, "both pc's"? Which 2 PCs do you mean? Please explain your setup, tell us the Operating System and the exact error and we'll try to help you.

      Greetings,

If I'm right then he is talking about ETHERNET card (or whatever they are called).

Well I'm guessing that if your motherboards were indeed burned, your computer wouldn't be able to run anymore. But I don't have an idea what could be the problem, in cases like these, I usually reset the router, but I'm only guessing you're having one, as you have 2 pc's.

Remember, during lighting storms power surges can travel through power lines, phone lines, and also Ethernet lines. If lightning struck near you or struck some power lines that you are hooked up to the spike in electricity could have shot up your Ethernet wire and overloaded your Ethernet card or mother board.

If the power surge was strong enough it could have even melted your Ethernet wires together or melted the insulation surrounding them so they are shorted out.

I would suggest examining every aspect of your network setup. You would need to check the wires, the routers, the wall sockets, the feed lines, the Ethernet cards, the MOBOs and anything else that was connected to the wall.

This should be a good lesson to everyone that proper power protection is important for all of your computer devices and for all connections. If you have a surge strip for your computer but connect directly to the wall with Ethernet cables your machine could still be damaged by a power surge.
