Database Setup

Hi all,

I work at a plastic injection moulding company as a QA Manager and I started a project in MS Access based on production figures, injection tools and associated scrap. Because some tools produce several Part Numbers it made sense to use Part Numbers as Primary Keys because they are generally unique. The odd two or three that were duplicated simply had an alpha suffix added to ensure that they stayed unique. Fairly straight-forward because all the input data is historical.

Now though, Production want me to create a module that assigns a particular Part Number to a machine for a specified period (Quantity required/production per hour) that will also allow for some field calculations (Operator & Machine Efficiency). The calculations don't bother me. What I can't get my head around is how do I input the Production requirements into a database table that allows for each subsequent shifts production figures to be deducted and presumably they'll want a planner type form that will show the days ahead with a colour bar indicating the predicted production run length. Any help from any source will be greatly appreciated,

The best advice I can give you is start off with a spreadsheet sample on how you would achieve this. This should give you a list of fields to normalise into a series of database tables.

When you have your general field list decided go to the top of the Access forum and in the thread called 'Links to useful site' you will find a link to help with this. If you have any questions we'll be glad to help.

Once the tables are created we can look at the rest of the issues.
