Can anyone suggest a good news reader program other than Outlook or Google?

Search the internet for "Newsreader s" and you'll get lots of hits.
The term "good' will vary according to what your needs are.

This is being written using 'Free Agent' (a free stripped down version
of Agent), and I've been trying and using at various times XNews,
XanaNews, 40tudeDialog, Noworyta, and some others I've already
forgotten. Each one has something to recommend it, and something I
    would like to have different.
Right now, Agent ($29 US) appears to have most of what I need, so I'll
probably buy the next full version of Agent when it comes out.

    Download and try them.

If you wish, you can read the newsreader newsgroups to see what users
think of them and some of the problems that might arise:

    alt.usenet.offl ine-reader.forte-agent
    and
    news.software.r eaders

You can try Mozilla, and its Thunderbird newsreader. Both are free
downloads from www.mozilla.org (I believe). They're pretty good, but slower
to load and run than IE and Outlook.

I like Agent but the current version supports only a single server. That is
supposed to be corrected in Version 2 of the product (currently in beta).
Forte has been promising for a long time now but there is still no release
        date posted.

I use Mozilla Thunderbird for news at work, as well as for mail at
home, I'm considering switching over to it for news at home as well.

            Mozilla Thunderbird
            Forté Agent (and FreeAgent)
            Anawave Gravity

All good in my book, all free with the exception of Agent (but then
            FreeAgent is free).

                  Yes, but .... <smile>

I create another directory and another shortcut pointing to that directory. Then
copy the license key in and it's done. A minute's work but livable.

The best news reader by FAR is Gravity. No fluff or glitz and best of
all it does NOT use that HORRID Windows Explorer interface... Not only
all of that but it is free!

I'm intrigued by 40tude. Would you happen to know if there is a newsgroup
or any sort of forum where I can get help with it?

No, just that I have no experience with any others, and wanted to eliminate
these two the list of possible replies, thinking that they may be popular.

Although I haven't had time yet to really try some others out, I have to say
that being able to search Google for threads - without having to download
1000's of them is quite handy.
