There are better newsreaders than Outlook Express, there are better mail
clients than Outlook Express. However, I've searched for, but can't find
anything that does both jobs as well as Outlook Express.

Whos terms? If you mean Google, I don't see how as they openly provide a
method of searching for whatever thread topics you wish to see.

Outlook express is total crap. It is more of a virus than it is
software. So you are saying that you settle for crap software just
because they bundled two pieces of shit that together are less lumpy
than anyone else's combo into a single package...

The one nice feature in OE is the filter 'replies to my posts'. Writers
of real news reader software should include such a filter because that's
quite how I use my news reader.

Sometimes MS can show handy features. Sort of prototyping.

Hey, nice suggestion. Never tried that.

I disagree with your assessment of Outlook Express as "total crap". As I
stated earlier, I've evaluated a plethora of newsreaders and email clients
but can't find a single product that can do both jobs as well as OE.

            My opinions:
            ------------
The best newsreaders: Agent and 40tude
            The best email client: Eudora

Features in OE that I am unwilling to abandon in other products:
            Configurable toolbar
Powerful window management (single button click to show/hide folder and
message windows, not zoom to full window the way that most do)
            Nested folders

Outlook: Fabulous mail client, so painfully slow that it is unusable
Agent: Excellent newsreader except that it only supports one server at a
            time, feeble mail client
40tude: Powerful newsreader, terrible UI (cluttered, difficult to configure,
            poor help), weak mail client
Thunderbird: Attractive, but slow and hardly configurable at all (it's a
            work in progress)
Gravity: Adequate newsreader, it's a dead unsupported product
            XNews: A sloppy mess

I'm still anxious to see Agent 2.0, but refuse to buy the current version in
hopes that the new one will be better than OE.
