I have hosted the mySql data directory on an external drive for years and I've never had any problems with it. I recently purchased a new external drive and relocated the data directory onto the new drive. Now the mySql service simply won't fire-up. I've done this a million times over the years so the process is not new to me. I have even had success hosting the exact same data directory on a flash/thumb drive with no problems whatsoever.
