Do you think ASP.NET is limited and difficult?
I've been checking out some of those www.asp.net/learn vB.NET/SQL videos... nice little tutorials to get a newbee started.
But I'm basically finding out that all the ASP.NET server controls like GridView / Detailsview / Dropdown
are basically fruitless... because if you have 200 customer records... what the heck kinda
drop down list or Grid would really support that?
Would you agree a real world... -
thanks, I followed your advice SELECT SCOPE_IDENTITY( ) and came across a moderator on asp.net, his name is Bob. Bob writes "I needed to retrieve a new ticket number upon insert...." so thats kinda like what I need to do.
Basically, I'm creating this VB.NET form to database project
for a manufacturing company, and they want their employees to click on the web based form and have a brand new reference number autopopulate... -
Auto populate / Auto increment in VB ASP.NET
Hello, all...
Just finished a handy tutorial that has helped me understand how to auto increment and post to a web page... but its only a Web User Control passing values from VB.NET method statements... I really need the increment and post from a SQL Server 2000 database
See Example:
http://sql-paul.com/lesson27_VB/Default.aspx
See Flowchart/Code Behind (I created it in Visio)
http://sql... -
Well, tlhintoq, your absolutely correct. A text box is better, set as read only - and changing the back color to show its not supposed to be changable. Your already getting me in the right direction!!
Now... how do I get this Text box populated with the auto increment from the database. It probably starts with some code in a Page_Load event... since a page load by the visitor is the event that fires the web form.
Thanks...Leave a comment:

Auto populate a field in VB ASP.NET
Hi All,
FACTS:
> I've created a VB.NET 2005 form, with a SQL Server 2000 backend
> The form has about 30 fields that populate 30 columns in the SQL database
> The form has mostly text feilds, with standard info such as Customer, order Number, etc.
> Im trying to autopopulate one of the feilds on the form, called Reference Number.
> The SQL column on the backend auto increments... -
Hi tlhintoq - thats really helpful... thanks... I'll move my efforts in that direction.
important points I gathered from you:
> thlintoq - checked as opposed to 'is selected'
--- I saw some other code leaning that direction
> thlintoq - avoid writing methods into button click handlers
--- I see your point on this, easier to modify later, etc
> thlintoq - calls to functions...Leave a comment:

Thanks tlhintoq...
Question 1: Any chance you could copy/paste the entire C# block if you have it handy? :-) C# could still be a useful snip, I could paste into the VB project and let the compiler flag the syntax errors!! At least I'd have a leg up on the project.
Question 2: about your if (chkDayShift.Ch ecked) block.... does the source code get written in the submit button coding itself after the
