    There is an easy way. We just have to help yez find it.

    Chances are, the two hubs aren't new enough to autonegotiate cable wiring and you need a crossover cable instead of a regular one. Test this by pinging between machines and seeing if the pinging works with 1 hub, the other hub, then both.

    If pinging works, make sure both groups are on the same subnet -- on windows, type ipconfig at a DOS prompt and make sure...

    What's the make and model of the thing you think is broken.

    What have you tested and how? Be specific, since (no disrespect) newbies generally have no idea how unknowledgeable (is that a word?) they are and sometimes aren't the best at testing or even properly identifying devices and symptoms.

    One would think it means 'oh-no!!!'

    Truth is, it is a bash shell construct for assigning a default value. In this case, it means 'if they don't give me a value, use zero'.
