    VB or VB.NET

    Greetings everyone,

Just a simple question that I am sure can be taken in many directions:

Is there any significant benefit to learning VB.NET as opposed to continuing to use VB? Other than the (enhanced?) object orientation of VB.NET, is there a clear advantage to using this language over plain old VB?

    Just curious what people think.

    Thanks

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

I utilized passing the form name as a string, however both solutions have taught me something new.

Again, thanks for the great help!

    Form Name As Sub Parameter

    Hello everyone,

This seems like a simple thing to do, however no matter what I try I cannot manage to pass a form name to a function in order to open that form. The name of the form is DisplayUI_CoreS earch_UniqueGro upCode_Count. The function is stored in a module called modUniqueCounts .

I keep getting a ByRef argument type mismatch error.

    Code:

Thank you both for the great input.

I am currently trying the FE / BE method to see how things respond in terms of access speed, etc. without investing in IT support at this time.

I will also look into the Access Data Project option as it really sounds ideal from a core data security / separation perspective. The ability to keep the current UI controls that my users and accustomed too is very nice.

    I...

    NeoPa,

    Thanks for the reply.

I guess I have three concerns with the FE / BE approach:

1.) Is an Access application actually capable of supporting up to, and maybe over, 1,000 users? I am thinking worst case scenario with say all 1,000 users searching at the same time. I know, it's extremely unlikley but.....

2.) Would speed be an issue? As Access is isn't technically a 'server', could...

Moving Up From Access For Data Search

    Hi everyone,

I realize this is a question that involves a tremendous amount of analysis based on numerous factors, but I am simply interested in getting some opinions from the forum.

I have spent a considerable amount of time developing a search application in Access for use by a total of ten people in my company. Well, the rest of the company has caught wind of the app and would like suggestions as to how to scale...

  • Reasonable Salaries for Access Database Designers and Managers

    Hi everyone,

This is a question for all of you out there who also work as Access database designers and administrators.

I know there are a lot of variables to consider when estimating your worth to a company, but I am curious as to what everyone thinks is a reasonable salary for someone who designs and programs all aspects of Access applications for a large company?

Keep in mind that the typical process...

  • So when we talk about interface vs. implementation, is it correct to view application frameworks basically as an implementation level from a 'routine software requirements' level? Connecting to the database, creating basic objects, etc. While on the other hand, the interface level would be such work as creating the database schemas, table joins, business logic, etc.?

It makes much more sense from a development perspective when you...

  • Hello,

I don't have tons of experience in this area, but here is my two cents that I hope may help.

Having a client lay everything out at the beginning is a rather unrealistic expectation to be honest. Most times, at least from my limited experience, many clients cannot articulate what it is they exactly need because they just don't know in the beginning. Expectations and needs will change as the application is being built....

The more I delve into software design and programming, the more I would agree 100% with what you have said.

Not having known what an SRS even was when I started working on this project probably saved me considerable time. I have spent some time 'looking back' at the initial stages of the applications development trying to figure out how I would have written an SRS. Based on the numerous diversions and changes...

  • Well, after doing some research, it appears I have been actually applying Agile development techniques to my projects without knowing it. This feels like a natural approach to me, so I guess I will stick with it as the issues I considered 'problems' turn out to actually be actual iterations in the philosophy.

    Application Development Guidelines

    Hi everyone,

Quick question regarding application development guidelines.

After working for a few months on developing an Access-based search tool, I have found that I may not have planned the whole project as well as I could initially.

Having no formal training in software development methodologies, I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good reading on the topic or point me to some templates...

Well, I cleaned up the column names (removed white space in the names) in the table that the data is being pulled from for this particular query. The SQL appears to be 'stable' in terms of vanishing at various times.

    Thanks for the tips puppydogbuddy.

    Thanks for the reply.

I will give the object naming suggestion a try (I probably should redo all my objects names anyway for this reason) and post an answer once complete if the changes actually help.

    Good deal.

I have actually been mulling over this but have not had a chance to implement any ideas to test a solution. Do you mind sharing how you got this to work?

Well, the easiest way to open a file on your hard drive would be the following:

    1. Create a button
    2. Set the HyperlinkAddres s property for the button to the name of the file.

You can set this link to point to an object in the current database or a file outside the database.

    Thats it.

It would appear your Bound Column for the combo box is set to column 1, the ID which I assume is your primary key.

The confusing part is that the Row Source of your control determines what is seen in your combo box. The Bound Column of your control determines what is actually passed to your query when you hit the submit button. Basically, what you see is not always what you get with controls.

    Change the Bound Column...

Your SQL string is not formed properly. Your string variable canno't be in the quotes and your parenthesis are incomplete.

Paste this into your code for your SQL string:

    strSQL = "INSERT INTO t_logon(user_na me, user_password, user_type_text) "
strSQL = strSQL & "VALUES (txtLogonName, txtNew, txtLogonType)"

    DanteEllis,

It appears you probably don't need the Me keyword in your textbox reference.

The easiest way to do this would be the following:

    1. Create a form.

    2. Create textbox controls on your form for each piece of data you need to insert into your database. So, you could create textbox controls and name them txtuser_name, txt_user_passwo rd, txt_user_type_t ext

    3. Add...
