    getting chararrays

    I have written a method which is supposed to get a string from the console and turn it into a char array, but it only returns gibberish, I can't see the problem either.
    Code:
        public static char[] readchararray()
    {
        BufferedReader dataIn = new BufferedReader( new InputStreamReader(System.in));
        String temp = "";
        int length = 1;
        char[] tempchar = new char[1];

      I don't know if I'm just not getting it, or I asked the wrong question but what I want to do is take a pre-existing character array, and store a series of integers into it.

            IF loop error?

            I am writing a Battleship 'Game' in Java as part of familiarizing myself with the language, but have run into a problem which I can't solve, for some inexplicable reason one of my if loops isn't working as it should, I have no idea what the problem is and would appreciate some help.
