I have set up my network, PC1 is running Vista, PC2 running XP. I have no problems using Vista pc to access files on XP pc. When trying to access files and printer from the XP pc I am asked for a user name and password. I have never used any passwords on the network before now, and don't recall being asked to set a password during creating the network.
