I am trying to setup a remote desktop connection to a windows xp machine.

i have set up my port forwadring on my router by forwarding my public ip address to 10.0.0.42 which is the ipa ddress i get from ip config on my xp machine under ethernet adapter local area connectio ip address to start and end port of 3389

i have enable remote connection on xp machine

when i try to connect from remote machine i get

remote desktop cant connect to the remote computer for one of these resons
    remote access is not enabled
    remote computer is off
remote computer not available on network

i have also tried connecting to ipaddress with the :3389 port on the end

i cant figure out where i have gone wrong.

if install logmein hamachi and run that on machine and use its ip address i can connect fine but i dont really want to use that.

Right click on My Computer and go to Properties and the Remote tab. Click on the Advanced button and make sure that the check box is checked to allows the computer to be controlled remotely. If this was already set, then it is possible that your firewall or anti-virus is blocking the connection.

XP Pro is the only XP version that can act as server. Have you tried connecting the other way round, however, you will still need professional or above for the Win7 part.

            Kind regards
