Does formatting Windows effect Linux ?

I have two operating systems in my laptop. 1.Windows Vista and 2.Ubuntu 10.04.
I want to install Windows 7 in my laptop. Obviously, I need to format my existing windows drive and then only i can install Windows 7. So, does formatting windows drive affect ubuntu ??

Since Ubuntu is on the same HD (Hard Drive) as your Windows installation, yes.

Just a moment, where did the OP say, that both were installed on the same HD? And even if so, if they are on different partitions, it shouldn't be much of a problem to format the Windows partition and keep Ubuntu. When formatting, you will have to be careful to only format the Windows partition, but other than that, you should be fine.

Also, when you've finished installing Windows, you'll have to fix the bootmanager (probably grub 2.0), as that will be overwritten by Windows. Here's a link on how to do that.

        Greetings,
