Startup error: diasymreader.dll is not correctly installed

what he has told me, he was doing a MS update, and it was, for him, taking too long.
so right in the middle of it, he STOPS IT. he is now, locked out of his laptop.

he gets as far as this

diasymreader.dl l is not correctly installed

at the top of a BLACK SCREEN. it freezes up there.
it will not go to the desk top.
i have tried everything i know, and can't make it budge.
when i told him just re-format it. i thought he was going to Explode. LoL
he has no CD's for re-formatting his laptop.
i don't even know if i am at the right site, for this kind of help.

please help if you can, he is driving me NUTS..

Tell your friend to either:
A) Have more patience next time
B) Just don't do the updates. If his computer is working fine, don't fix it.
