There are three major OS types:
- Windows (most Software supports Windows and it is the most widespread system - note, I said most widespread, not most popular ^^)
- Unix (includes OS X from Apple, FreeBSD, Solaris, etc. - depending on which one you take, it has different advantages and disadvantages)
- Linux (quite similar to Unix in many ways and comes in many "flavours" like Ubuntu, OpenSuse, Slackware, Gentoo, etc. - has advantages and disadvantages too of course)
The Question, which would be the best for you can only be answered, if we know, what you want to do with it.
- If you want to play, Windows will certainly be the easiest.
- If you want a server, you should try Linux (e.g. Debian, Arclinux, ...).
- If you work with media a lot (cutting audio and video, editing photos etc.), OS X is very popular.
- If you don't want to spend (a lot of / any) money on your OS, Window is certainly the wrong choice.
- If you don't want to buy a new system and / or don't want to spend a lot of money on upgrading your hardware, you'll probably not want OS X.
- If you want support by a company (which isn't always better than a open forum by the way - just thinking of Windows support and the Ubuntu forum ^^), most Linuxes will be a bad choice.
So, you see, there is a lot you have to consider. If you give us more information about what you want to do, I'm sure we can help you decide.
