Data area passed to a system call is too small Error while installing a printer

I have been trying to install a Zebra LP2844 on a computer running Windows XP. When using the add printer wizard I get an error that simply tells me "The printer could not be installed," but when using the plug and play auto detect wizard I get the error "Data area passed to a system call is too small." The printer has worked on this particular computer before, but when it started malfunctioning I tried reinstalling the drivers and that is when I got the errors.

I have tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the drivers, I have tried using different printer ports, I've tried automatic and manual setup, and the printer works on a different computer.

I have tried googleing the error, but that didn't help me much as this seems to be a fairly general error message. I know there have been a number of topics involving this error message on this forum, but unfortunately I was unable to locate any which apply to the installation of a printer.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Mark

    Hi Morias welcome to TSDN,

the problem could have risen when you uninstalled and re-installed, there could be an error in its registry keys that is causing the problem

There is a very recent version of the the Zebra LP2844 driver dated 26-Apr-2007. If your version is older than that, give that a try.

I did two thing before restarting my pc and I was then able to install the printer.

I was able to fix this by disabling the Windows Firewall.

THen I removed an HP Bios and Smart Card software Security Manager from Add/Remove Software.

I'm pretty sure it was the Windows Firewall that was enabled but I included that stupid software that came with HP just in case.

            Thanks.

                I had the same problem,
Removing the HP Printer software resolved my issue.

There is also a hotfix from MicroSoft that might help you:

                http://support.microso ft.com/default.aspx?sc id=KB;EN-US;822779

You might want to think what you loaded last that caused this issue.

                Good Luck!
