hiding partitions or drives in windows

hy all

i don't have a good net connection at home ( it isn't cheap either ) so i can't download alot of stuf but at school we have lets say a good net (15 - 30 KB/s)
so i conviced one of the teacher to let me put a HDD in a pc ( @ school) .
the problem is that other techers or school mates shouldn't see the partitions ( on my drive ) using explorer , but i need to have acces to it and utorrent should be able to save files on it.

For this problem you need to have policies enabled which means you have to talk to the it admin at the school and have him help you out. Your other option is to setup password protecction on that particular hard drive. hiding it all together can only be accomplished with policies as far as I know. Good luck.

there is no "it admin" at my hyschool, there are only " it teachers :-P " and please belive me they are " more stupide then the law alaws"

Hi,
Depending on your OS there are different ways for assining Policys.
For XP stand allone PC try start/run/gpedit.msc
Here are some useful Links for using the Tool, but be sure you know what you do with this tool!!!

Hi,

You have two options:

1. The First method is very simple.

This will work for Win XP, Win 2003, and Win 2000. I dont know about Win 98.

Type command "compmgmt.m sc" in the run dialog box. It till launch the Computer Management MMC Console.
There you can find three root items.
Then select "Disk Management" from "Storage tab".
There you will see the disk partitions.
Select the drive you want to hide. Be sure that close all applications that are using that drive. Then Right click on that drive will popup you some options. Select "Change Drive Letters and Paths...".
Then it will launch the dialog. On that dialog you will have three buttons "Add", "Change", "Remove". Click on remove. It will popup message. Click "Yes". Then close the window. Now launch the My Computer. Now you will not see the drive you have hidden to any user. Whenever you want to use this drive follow same procedure but this time insted of removing the drive letter "Add" drive letter, that drive will become visible.
If you have two OS on one machine then follow this process for both OS.

2. Using Registry Key : I think this one is some what difficult.

The second method is to add the NoDrive entry of type REG_DWORD to the registry. Open a registry editor, then navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_US ER\Software\Mic rosoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Policies\Explor er registry subkey. From the Edit menu, select New, DWORD Value, then type the name NoDrive. The values for this data type range from 0x0 (the default setting), which disables the value and displays all drives, to 0x3FFFFFF, which hides all system drives (i.e., A through Z). Other values include

0x3—hides drives A and B
0x4—hides drive C
0x7—hides drives A, B, and C
0x8—hides drive D
0xF—hides drives A, B, C, and D
Be aware that this option simply hides the drive icons in My Computer and Windows Explorer—users can still use a command window to display the drives' contents. . . .

For a down to earth person, making the folders hidden may also work as a simple alternative.
