Cannot search from IE browser

all of a sudden, when I try to access a website from the ..file, open area of internet explorer nothing happens. I have to "x" it off and "not responding" comes up and I have to close the browser. We don't remember downloading anything recently.

So basically, I cannot access any websites that are not listed in my favorites. I can't even access a site from any email links. I have run virus checks, spyware checks. Nothing. I even did the restore option to a month ago. I just don't know where to look for the settings or what setting to check.

Any thoughts? I have searched several data bases with no luck. Microsoft wants minumum $30 bucks to ask.

just poking my head in here... i think that is a registry issue with the default browser search.
