How to increase the security of our web based email accounts?

How can we increase the security of our Yahoomail and Gmail accounts, to avoid intrusion...?
also suggest some softwares, that can be used for the same...

Good tips to keep your public account email secure:

• Use trusted computers (home, office)
• use a complex password (numbers, letters, capitalization, punctuation)
• change your password regularly
• keep a seperate dummy account for newsletters and various non-important email communications
• Avoid using your email in public wifi hotspots, etc. Always over trusted networks.
• Secure your own home,office wifi. With wep, wpa, etc. Use a mac filter list.
