Working with Excel sheets in Visual Basic 2008

Hello all,

I'm a newbie in the VB-world. I have to create an application that gets data out of an excel file. But I'm quite stuck even trying to get VB2008 to even talk to Excel.

I added Excel 12.0 Object library to my references but from there on I'm stuck.

Basically I want to load cellvalues in variables. So if someone could give me a puch in the right direction, that would be great.

What I want to do is get information out of a sort of database, preferably XML and display that data in Labels in VB2008.

So if anyone could help me figure out a decent method to achieve this, that would be great.
I've been looking into Linq, but the trouble is that I don't know anything about databases so the tutorial is not making much sense to me :-)
