You have a few options:
1. Use a USB to Serial adapter and program to the serial port
2. Purchase a USB IO library from some place like: http://www.thesycon.de/eng/usbio.shtml which is very expensive, but should provide everything you need.
3. Learn to write your own device driver
AKAIK USB is nothing so simple like the serial port used to be - it's a very different technology. Sadly it lacks many aspects the serial world supported - including very long distances (as in RS 422 serial which can go up to 10-thousand feet).
