strung with a String

Hello all.
I am relatively new to vb. I need to make a string which contains an escape character '\a' Something like "username\apass word"

Dim data as String
data = "username\apass word" creates the string but '\' and 'a' are separate characters.

I hope I have made my problem clear. any help is welcomed....

In C i could have done it with
sprintf(buf, "%s%c%s", username, '\a', password);

do anyone knows how to do the same in vb?
