But it only works on webpages that do not require authentication?

Well it depends on how the authentication system is implemented. There's
the standardize http://(username):(password)@(hostname)/(document) and the
nonstandardized GET methods that can go something like
http://(hostname)/(document)?usernam...word=(password)
