How can I run my VB6 program from a server?

How do I install my VB6 program onto a file server such that everyone can
run that single copy? Is there a problem with it not installing the
packaged files on each individual PC?

    Thanks!

y'might wanta convert the app to an asp, php, jsp, psp, or cgi Web
    application
yep - more coding - and yep - we know - not much documentation on that vb6
    program
think of it as an opportunity to learn something new. - but think of it this
way - only one install to worry about

Users will still need to run the setup program, and install the support
files on their own machine (unless you have a very light setup and are
lucky). Try to make sure you aren't going to add more controls or other
references to the app for a while.

Once that is done, you can put the exe itself on the file server, and
have users run it from there. This lets you update the executable as
needed, with no actions needed by the users.

Other than for ease of deployment (lazy sods ;-) ) why would anyone want to put
any kind of an application out where it will, in all likelyhood, be accessed
using Microsoft's least secure application ever?????

As long as you put all the referenced dlls etc in the same folder as your
..exe you shouldn't need to install anything on the clients....

I think you still have to register them, though, if they are COM dlls or
            ocxs.

Maybe J. French can comment on that...

              Yes,
I've seen the VB IDE locate and register an OCX that I had just copied
              over with source.

However, I've just done a test with a DLL that I created on one
              machine and copied to another.

Running compiled ... the EXE did not find it
Running in the IDE ... the IDE did not find it

There is nothing to prevent the OP from having a startup EXE that
registers everything it finds - say if dates look different
              - I know one place where that is standard practice

Right, I always forget that it is possible to have an exe do the
registering. If the main exe checked a date somewhere (last registered
vs last update), couldn't it do the registering, as long as it did it
before any of the DLLs or OCXs were needed? Or does it need to be a
                separate startup app?

Drop all of the forms out of the program and turn it into an ActiveX control
(either dll or exe) on the server and then implement all of the forms as asp
pages. If components are implemented as separate dll's corrections and
updates can be done without having to reinstall all of the program on the
server. I am making the assumption here that you have only data
presentation and data collection on the forms, if you have business logic
coded into the forms, it will be a lot more difficult.
