Storing username and password

I have an application that has a username and password hard-coded in it. I
would like to remove this from inside the application but keep it secure.
What is a good way to do this?

Mark,

A good way (in my opinion the best) is to use the inbuild system. That
prevents direct that your solution does look from the past millenium.
