The "standard" Window's icons are included with Visual Studio if you
    bought the Profession edition.

Seth has given good advice. The icons included on the VS 2005 disk are
normally e.g. WinXP Icons, enough for a standard application.

It is important to keep a simple and consistent feel within an application.
It should be noted that programmers often do not really understand the level
of computer literacy (and very often, mind reading skills) of their users.
It is a good idea to keep to the Windows standard.

If you really want to "knock yourself out", get a program like Icon Digger.
I currently have some 500000 icons that I have gathered for free. I use
      about 20!
