creating a file extension programmatically

hi, i want to be able to create a file extension programmaticall y (like .abc
will open my app), but all gogole searches came up with VB code in VB5 or
earlier....whic h used API calls that i couldnt decipher. The microsoft web
page also wasnt helpful because the information i was looking for was cut
off...does anyone know how to do this in .net? thanks
