I am new to MS SQL server running on Windows 2003 SBS server. My question is can I get query analyzer running on my desktop or must I always remote terminal over to the server to test my queries using query analyzer there? thanks

Yes you can get query analyser installed on your computer.
On the installation disk and a shortway into the installation process
you will have 3 option which I can't remember the exact wording.
Basically the otions are to
1) install a database instance
2) client connectivity
3) client connectivity and tools
you want the client connectivity and tools option
