Error installing SQL Server2000: A previous program installation created pending file operations on the installation machine

I am trying to install SQL Server 2000 on a Win2K OS machine but I
    get this error message:

"A previous program installation created pending file operations on
the installation machine. You must restart the computer before running
    setup."

I see others have had this problem but have fixed it using the solution
    in:

I have tried the solution but to no avail. The registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACH INE\SYSTEM\Curr entControlSet\C ontrol\Session
Manager\Pending FileRenameOpera tions keeps reappearing as soon as I
    close RegEdit.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    lq

    Hi

    A few thoughts!
Have you checked the permissions for this entry?
Do you have any policies that may put this back or software that will negate
    this change?
Have you checked the other control sets?

Try logging on using the administrator(s ) account that left the
pending file operations then apply the fix.

Thanks for the thoughts on this. It turned out to be a nasty trojan
that slipped though the Norton Anti-Virus and kept creating the
registry entries. I ended up reinstalling the OS completely since it
looked pretty compromised. BTW: SQL Server 2000 would not install no
mater what remedy I tried until reinstalling the OS.
