    Server Reboot

    Hello,
I have a server running Windows 2000 Advanced and Sql Server. The
systems runs fine throughout the day but reboots at night, somtimes
multiple times. The event log has a message that reads "The previous
system shutdown at X:XX PM was unexpected."

    Any ideas?

Not really - without more information, the best you can do is try to gather
some extra clues. Is there anything unusual in any log file before the
shutdowns, are there any jobs scheduled in Windows or MSSQL which coincide
with the shutdowns, have you run hardware diagnostics, did you upgrade any
    drivers recently, etc.

Is the server on a UPS?

        Paul--

This may or may not pertain...I run SQL Server 2000 on a Dell Poweredge
2500 that exhibited the same behavior. The box has redundant power
supplies and apparently some condition in their interaction forced
random hard re-boots, mostly during the night. I don't know the
technical characteristics of the solution, but unplugging one of the
power supplies fixed the intermittant rebooting. The loss of redundancy
seemed a small price to pay for the uninterrupted up-time.

It's been working fine for over a year.

Hope this helps in your case.
